Buspar And Alcohol Resource in Q&A
Buspar and alcohol interaction? I was recently put on Buspar for anxiety and the weekend is comming up and im wondering what if any possible side effects will their be. I did a pretty quick search and found alot of vague details mostly like this "Although BuSpar does not intensify the effects of alcohol, it is best to avoid alcohol while taking this medication." so what i want to know is why is it best to avoid alcohol when it apparently has no side effects with alcohol?

johnson_mary@ymail.com replied: "BuSpar Oral Uses This medication is used to treat anxiety. It may help you think more clearly, relax, worry less, and take part in everyday life. It may also help you to feel less jittery and irritable, and may control symptoms such as trouble sleeping, sweating, and pounding heartbeat. Buspirone is a medication for anxiety (anxiolytic) that works by affecting certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters). How to use BuSpar Oral Take this medication by mouth, usually 2 or 3 times a day or as directed by your doctor. You may take this medication with or without food, but it is important to choose one way and always take it the same way so that the amount of drug absorbed will always be the same. "

Sliteofhand replied: "The main reason being that when you ingest alcohol it enters the bloodstream and depending on the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream then the amount of other chemicals is diminished and since the Buspar affects the nervous system if there is an absence of enough chemical to work properly then the drug is ineffective and the sensory receptors may receive false signals thus sending incorrect data to the brain causing anxiety, insomnia or seizures( the side effects may be enhanced by taking alcohol and cutting the presence of the Buspar in the bloodstream)."

Does anyone know if you can drink alcohol while taking paxil and buspar? The doctor just put me on new meds. The paxil sheet says, "Avoid alcohol." Or what? There's a great deal of difference between it might make you sick and it will kill you. Does anyone have experience or been told something by their doctor that could help me out?

Nic-Nic replied: "No. Alcohol and pills will mess your stomach lining up. Its called an ulcer."

david42 replied: "The use of alcohol may increase the effects of the drug. Now, many folks drink while taking medications that have instructions the tell the user to avoid alcohol. It is not my suggestion to combine the two. If you determine to do so, please be in a place where help is available and you do not have to drive."

Clickclack replied: "Learn more about paxil. While taking this drug, your liver does not function as well. Therefore, drinking can cause more excessive liver damage from even a smaller amount of drinking, which will lead to cirrhosis, as well as several other dangerous and potentially fatal diseases. But you need to know more about paxil before you commit to staying on it. Possible liver damage is the smallest thing you have to worry about while being on it - I know first-hand. I am barely surviving a taper, and am hardly escaping with my life. Go to the forum below, and get the facts on the deadly drug Paxil. It isn't run by quacks: we have medical professionals, researchers, and people just like you trying to live through paxil, paxil side effects, and paxil tapering."

buspar (antianxiety) + alcohol? what happens if i get drunk while on buspar, ive researched it and it said theres no "bad reaction" but you still shouldn't use alcohol, so why not? "While formal studies of the interaction of BUSPAR with alcohol indicate that BUSPAR does not increase alcohol-induced impairment in motor and mental performance, it is prudent to avoid concomitant use of alcohol and BUSPAR." (psyweb.com)

sweet_thing_kay04 replied: "Well first of all alcohol is a downer. So u take a antian anxiety pill on top of alcohol is asking for trouble.Sure you can do it but u are putting yourself at risk of either overdosing, falling asleep and choking on your puke, and the best one is going into deeper depression from the booze. So go have a few on me."

Buspar and alcohol???????? Can Buspar help wean you off alcohol? Can I take it as an alternative instead of drinking? I guess what I really mean is will Buspar help with the Alcohol withdrawals?

Coral M replied: "again with this question?"

jaynellekenney replied: "Buspar is mainly used for anxiety. It also treats symptoms that are common with alcohol withdrawl, like fear, tension, irritability, dizziness, pounding heartbeat, and other physical symptoms. So, the short answer is yes."

J P replied: "do not combine the two. DONT. it is extremely dangerous to mix buspar and alcohol... so if you are going to treat it to help detox then DONT drink and be sure you wont. 100%"

Laurie H replied: "you can't take them together. buspar helps you through the withdrawls, but you have to commit to stop drinking before you can start taking buspar. You sound like you are looking to replace alcohol with a drug. I hope what you really mean is you'd like to use buspar while you are withdrawing from alcohol, but then you are committed to living a life free from all drugs and alcohol."

Audrey D replied: "There are several other medications that are used for alcohol withdrawal. Buspar is not the drug of choice. As a nurse, I have worked in detox & cared for patients suffering through withdrawal. Initially, Buspar is not used. It does not work fast enough to treat the increased heart rate & feeling of panic. As others has said, it is very,VERY dangerous to mix Buspar & alcohol. Do not do it. If you need help with alcohol withdrawal you should seek the help of your health care provider. Not many providers deal with detox/withdrawal. Good luck to you."

Buspar and alcohol consumption? I know what I have read on my pre ion label, but I was prescribed buspar for GAD, and I am willing to try something new. My doctor never mentioned that I could not drink alcohol on this medication, but I enjoy going out and watching a football game and having a couple beers here and there. I do not want to end up in a gutter somewhere because I took this medication. I plan on speaking to my doctor, of course, but I was just curious... Has anyone drank a low to moderate amount of alcohol on this medication and is it something I should worry about? Thanks in advance!

davelennv replied: "I take Klonopin and drink beer with it and have had no adverse effects. You should not have any if you are on a low dose other than possible increased drowsiness."

David D replied: "I believe it's safe to combine the two. I have two or three beers once in a while. Buspar is a CNS depressant which means it will just have an additive effect to the alcohol. Just don't over do it."

Celexa, Buspar, and Alcohol? This morning, I took one 20mg pill of Celexa and one 10mg pill of Buspar at 9:00am and 1:00pm respectively. I just got a pre ion for these pills, and I've only been taking them for two days. Would it be safe for me to consume alcohol tonight? I had planned on waiting until at least 1:00am to begin drinking to give the Buspar at least 12 hours in my system. For the record, I know that it's not a good think to take any type of drug with alcohol; I'm really just trying to assess my risk given the circumstances. Thanks!

Lisa E replied: "I would say no because I am a recovering addict, but 1-2 light alcoholic beverages may not hurt you. The real smart thing to do is refrain from the alcohol. It is your body and life, so use it wisely."

purplelap replied: "Do you know that alcohol and medication together can kill you, no matter how long you wait to take it or how much you drink. I learned this in Pharmacy Tech school. I talk 15 medications and any alcohol will kill me right away so I don't do it I drink pop, tea, hot Chocolate, and kool aid in place of it. These are safer and there is a variety."

What about Buspar and Alcohol? What happens when you mix Buspar and Vodka?

Coral M replied: "people realize you have a problem."

drphilbert replied: "What happens when you eat fiber all day all day, drink buspar and alcohol, then fart when you are about to pass out? You shart."

Platinum 2009 replied: "well you could get liver toxic sickness Buspar is no joke you do one or the other.Vodka is good stuff but mixing a downer like Buspar with it is a bad idea but your probably going to be stupid and try anyway right?"

Can I drink alcohol IN MODERATION with Lithium and Buspar ? I am talking in tiny amounts...like a glass of wine every few weeks .

ambr123 replied: "With Buspar it wouldn't be a huge problem. Lithium is a different story-you really shouldn't drink any alcohol while you're taking it."

jay g replied: "Sure....but if your waking up naked in themorning and not remembering what happened the night before it would be a good indication that you should stop."

slippyske replied: "EVERY DOCTOR AND PHARMASIST WILL TELL YOU AND RIGHTFULLY SO YOU SHOULD NEVER DRINK WITH ANY OF THESE TYPE OF DRUGS. THEY ARE ALL CNS (CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM) DEPRESSANTS AND YOU ARE PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE ANY TIME YOU DO IT. IT SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD BE INNOCENT ENOUGH BUT "VIOLA" PEOPLE CAN DO THINGS MANY TIMES UN-EVENTFULLY AND THEN ONE TIME ALL THE STARS IN YOUR BODY ALIGN AND BOOM YOUR DEAD! JUST SAY NO.....PLEASE!"

Sara K replied: "it is up to you to make the decision because it is your body and your health.... but i would talk to your doctor first before you do. i doubt it is safe though because lithium and buspar are processed through the liver. and alcohol is too. you do not want to mess up your blood levels or do anything to risk liver failure. or anything that would reduce the effectiveness of your meds. if you do decide to drink while on meds, please don't drive because your reflexes would be seriously affected and i wouldn't want you to hurt yourself or someone else. be safe and be smart and be well!"

Serinity4u2find replied: "Alcohol causes the lithium and the buspar to not work at its full potential and slowly decreases the more you drink. Drinking with those medications can also cause nausea. What you choose to do is up to you. I just wanted to provide you with the information."

Nervous to try Buspar, have not heard much about it, what do you know? Lexapro was horrible and I am scared? I am really nervous about side effects, Lexapro has way too many of them for me. I have not heard much about Buspar. What do you know about it? Am I ok to start it during the week? I don't want it to make me sick because I cannot afford a day off of work. I know this is a bad question, but I am curious, can you drink alcohol on Buspar? On Saturdays I go to football games and would love to be able to still drink there. I could not do that with Lexapro because it made me sick. Thanks for your help :)

zeroefx8 replied: "Buspar can have similar side effects, commonly, dizziness, nausea, and headache (especially when you start the medicine). While technically you can drink small quantities infrequently on the medication it is not a good idea. If you are nervous to start it, I would wait if possible until the weekend. I would also suggest that you skip the beer and have a soda. The big thing to keep in mind is that like lexapro, the side effects are the worst for the first few weeks and then should subside. You should always give the medicine at least 3-4 weeks before you give up on it."

Gary Walker replied: "yeah, agree with poster above me. some of these antidepressants/ anti anxiety medicines.......can take a full 6 weeks before you feel "right". even though all the warning labels will tell you to avoid alcohol.....you will probably be able to get away with drinking a few beers without feeling any problems. but i would suggest not doing that until the medicine kicks in and you feel "right"."

AbeLincolnParty replied: "regarding alcohol, it might cause addtional impairment of motor functions increasing the likelyhood of an accident. There are other comments on side effects and interactions with alcohol at the FDA web link below: The drug infrequently causes an increase in liver enzyme levels in the blood, an indication of liver injury. In general as a rule of thumb mixing liver toxic drugs together (tylenol, alcohol, ect) increases the risk of liver injury. The FDA information does not state this explictily, it is just common sense. Now, what Buspar does is a rather fuzzy, the manufacture lists possible mechanisms of action, but lists more mechanisms that it rules out, but not entirely rules out. So it is just suppose to be an anti-anxiety drug unlike valium like drugs, but it looks more like an antipsycotic drug, but they say it is not. The real question you should consider asking is can you get by without this drug or any other drug. Sometimes a change in circumstances is the best medicine, but the drug companies cannot bottle that."

Andree replied: "Buspar is used to treat anxiety. It may help you think more clearly, relax, worry less, and take part in everyday life. While lexapro, you can read in this blog's report Compare it yourself and find what is suitable for you"

Buspar? I am nervous to start it due to my bad experience with Lexapro. What are your opinions on Buspar? I am really nervous about side effects, Lexapro has way too many of them for me. I have not heard much about Buspar. What do you know about it? Am I ok to start it during the week? I don't want it to make me sick because I cannot afford a day off of work. BILL C replied: "I don't think Buspar will make you physically sick. It made me feel a little weird. I discontinued it because it gave me night terrors when I drank even a beer."

tenngal58 replied: "My 17 yr. old daughter was also on Lexapro but didn't like it. The doctor started her on Buspar- a half of a 15 mg. tab, then the full tab after 7-10 days. She likes it better. The side effects are lessened if you start at a lower dose and gradually increase it to the optimum dose for you. The following website tells about it: Just click on the different tabs above the article to get all the info. It's recommended that one not drink alcohol while taking it as it can increase the sedative properties of the alcohol."
