Questions and Answers
Is it ok to take allergy meds such as claritin /tylenol/ benadryl while barely prego? Ok the question says it all. If not even fully 1 month pregnabt is it ok to take these pills for allergies without the possibility of harm to the Embryo? Aside from the whole baby thing is it ok to drink coffee and take allergy meds?

Amanda replied: "Benadryl is generally considered safe to take while pregnant, so is tylenol. It's always best to double check with your doctor as he/she may prefer you use something else, though."

Can I take Claritin and Tylenol Cold at the same time? Or do they both do the same job? I just have a cold and I'm trying to get through the day!

cutie2008 replied: "yeah you can i did it before and it worked for me"

a.danielle_2010 replied: "I honestly dont think that you should take 2 different types of medicine at the same time. i dont think that it is safe. but maybe you could take one type and then a few hours later take the other type. I recommend LOTS of water and as much rest as you can get. chicken noodle soup always makes me feel better Best of luck ~a.dani"

momoftwo replied: "Look at the label. What are the active ingredients. If they are the same....then don't take them together. If they are different, they work in different ways....maybe for the same thing...but different ways...so it's okay to take together."

bodmodangel replied: "I would take them at the same time. I was told by my pharm. that I could take Claritin and Benadryl at the same time and I know they do the same thing. But if you are doubting it; just call a local pharmacy and ask them; they will tell you."

Can you take Tylenol PM with Claritin D? I took a 12 hour Claritin D about 3 hours ago, and I'll probably take a Tylenol PM in about a hour or so. Is this ok or will it make me sick?

thoro1 replied: "I do it all the time. I probably won't make you sick"

Sam replied: "I've done that before. It doesn't make you sick but it will most likely make you drowsy to the point of passing out and you will most likely wake up with a headache from sleeping too hard. If you don't get drowsy from meds easily, you'll most likely do a little better."

poorsinner replied: "You should be ok. with tylenol.Doctors perscribe it all the time. claritin-D contains sudafed. it will keep you awake"

I am taking cephalexin 500mg, can I take tylenol or Claritin for my allergies? I started taking cephalexin since 2 days ago and today I caught allergy (runny nose, sneezing etc). Therefore I was wondering if if was ok to take Tylenol or Claritin for my allergy since I have my exam tomorrow and I just can't study. Thank You all.

Chris H replied: "It shouldn't be any trouble. I'd take the Claritin & leave the Tylenol alone."

mevlana replied: "I think so, but ask a pharmacist or your doctor's office to be sure."

Cosmic replied: "Both medicines have no counter actions with Cephalexin,so go ahead.Best of luck with ur exams :)"

operation m replied: "Cephalexin is for treating minor respiratory and urinary tract infections and as a backup or alternative to penicillin treatment, Reguler Tylenol is an analgesic for mild pain but not for inflammation; also used as an antipyretic. Claritin isa antihistamine for seasonal allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose (rhinitis), itching eyes, and sneezing. It is also used for hives. You can go on webmd and look up alot of this stuff, but as for your question, you shoud always contact the doctor who knows your medical history. You may have reaction to med unknown to the yahoo crowd. Anyway, as long as you don't have any allerges to meds you should be ok with over the counter claritin, or tylenol cold and flu. Sudafed would be fine too."

Primalstorm replied: "Ask Your Doctor."

Tylenol, Claritin harmful during pregnancy? I've been taking reg. strength Tylenol (as alot of pregnant women do) for aches and pains, especially headaches. I don't exceed the recommended dosage per day. My Dr. also recommended that I take Claritin for my severe allergy problems. The Claritin helps a little bit. Now the Dr. has prescribed Nasonex for my nasal allergies. I was told to use it along with the Claritin. Now, here's my problem. If you go to and type in Claritin, Tylenol, or Nasonex, there is a whole list of problems that come up!!! How can our Dr.'s feel comfortable with telling us it's okay to take these during pregnancy when in reality, studies have shown that it's not!?!?! I'll add details and show you guys what it says about each. Are there are other pregnant women out there who feel just as concerned as I do? Should I continue taking these medicines? Tylenol: Category B * Crosses the placenta. * In therapeutic doses it is safe for short-term use. * No well controlled human data, but there has been reports that maternal toxic doses can cause fetal liver toxicity, kidney abnormalities and intrauterine death. * Suggested possible association with congenital dis of the hip and club foot if used anytime during pregnancy. * Exposure to large doses of acetaminophen and propoxyphene throughout pregnancy can cause craniofacial and digital anomalies and infant withdrawal symptoms. Claritin: Category B Fetal Risk: * Not teratogenic in animals. * Data not available in human pregnancy but reported possible association with some congenital defects: Cardiac defects, diaphragmatic hernia, cleft palate, microphthalmia and deafness. Nasonex: Category C Fetal Risk: * Studies on animals show adverse effect and toxicity on fetus. * No adequate and well controlled studies done on pregnant women. * Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Tylenol: Category B Fetal Risk: * Crosses the placenta. * Exposure to large doses of acetaminophen and propoxyphene throughout pregnancy can cause craniofacial and digital anomalies and infant withdrawal symptoms.

missyW replied: "i would not take the claritin or Nasonex. and do not take the tylenol everyday, i know its safe in small doses, as i had taken tylenol with my first preg, the doctor said not to take everytime i had a headache just when needed, talk to your doctor and see if theres alternatives, but i would not take them as those risks are to high and too much!"

fiona t replied: "I wouldn't worry about it so much, Tylenol is safe during pregnancy, as long as your not taking it all the time, as well as antihistamines, everything in moderation. Your doctor is not going to tell you to use something that will hurt your baby, especially something that millions of women use during pregnancy. Get a second opinion if you are worried, and do not rely on information that you have found on the internet, it is not always reliable. I took Tylenol when I was pregnant and know of dozens of other women that have taken Claritin, etc. and there have been no problems with any of out babies."

mrsking022 replied: "Wow you did your research!!!that's great well when i was pregnant the Dr. told me that if I absolutely had to take anything then take Tylenol so i took it only when i needed to he also recommended Benadryl was suprised by the Benadryl!!! I think you should continue to take them in moderation."

dragonflykagerou84 replied: "I suggest you express your concerns to your doctor. Don't forget he/she is the doctor, and has been to med school. I am sure your doctor would not give you something that will most certainly damage your child. I understand your allergy needs though, I had the worst allergies, and i wouldn't take anything for them. My docs told me the only thing I could take was sudafed and that don't work for me."

mkys replied: "I to was on claritan because I am allergic to benadryl.. as long as you take the meds in moderation it will be ok."

brandi m replied: "im not sure of the nasonex. i know that category a and b are fine. you should only use category c if the benefits outweigh the risks. tylenol and plain claritin (not d) are safe. if you dont feel comfortable taking them then dont. its all up to you. however you should not suffer either. if you want to use a nose spray use saline, not the rx."

alimagmel replied: "Look, there are a lot of sites on the internet designed by alarmists that think *everything* people put into their bodies, especially during pregnancy, are absolutely horrible, but it's up to you. I found this info about Claritin at (who gets their info straight from the FDA): "Pregnancy Category B There was no evidence of animal teratogenicity in studies performed in rats and rabbits at oral doses up to 96 mg/kg (approximately 75 times and 150 times, respectively, the maximum recommended human daily oral dose on a mg/m2 basis). There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, loratadine should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed." This is about Nasonex: "Pregnancy Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category C: When administered to pregnant mice, rats, and rabbits, mometasone furoate increased fetal malformations. The doses that produced malformations also decreased fetal growth, as measured by lower fetal weights and/or delayed ossification. Mometasone furoate also caused dystocia and related complications when administered to rats during the end of pregnancy. In mice, mometasone furoate caused cleft palate at subcutaneous doses of 60 mcg/kg and above (less than the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). Fetal survival was reduced at 180 mcg/kg (approximately 2 times the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). No toxicity was observed at 20 mcg/kg (less than the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). In rats, mometasone furoate produced umbilical hernia at topical dermal doses of 600 mcg/kg and above (approximately 10 times the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). A dose of 300 mcg/kg (approximately 6 times the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis) produced delays in ossification, but no malformations. In rabbits, mometasone furoate caused multiple malformations (eg, flexed front paws, gallbladder agenesis, umbilical hernia, hydrocephaly) at topical dermal doses of 150 mcg/kg and above (approximately 6 times the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). In an oral study, mometasone furoate increased resorptions and caused cleft palate and/or head malformations (hydrocephaly or domed head) at 700 mcg/kg (approximately 30 times the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). At 2800 mcg/kg (approximately 110 times the MRDID dose in adults on a mcg/m2 basis), most litters were aborted or resorbed. No toxicity was observed at 140 mcg/kg (approximately 6 times the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). When rats received subcutaneous doses of mometasone furoate throughout pregnancy or during the later stages of pregnancy, 15 mcg/kg (less than the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis) caused prolonged and difficult labor and reduced the number of live births, birth weight, and early pup survival. Similar effects were not observed at 7.5 mcg/kg (less than the MRDID in adults on a mcg/m2 basis). There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. NASONEX Nasal Spray, 50 mcg, like other corticosteroids, should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits justify the potential risk to the fetus. Experience with oral corticosteroids since their introduction in pharmacologic, as opposed to physiologic, doses suggests that rodents are more prone to teratogenic effects from corticosteroids than humans. In addition, because there is a natural increase in corticosteroid production during pregnancy, most women will require a lower exogenous corticosteroid dose and many will not need corticosteroid treatment during pregnancy. Nonteratogenic Effects: Hypoadrenalism may occur in infants born to women receiving corticosteroids during pregnancy. Such infants should be carefully monitored." So, Nasonex does indeed seem to be bad. But I can tell you from my own pregnancy experience that me taking Tylenol throughout my pregnancy did *nothing* to my son. He's perfectly healthy. So be careful what you read on the internet. That Safe Fetus site seems like an alarmist site that wants to promote the belief that no outside medicine is good for pregnancy (which just isn't true). All in all, just use your discretion."

Chasmin S replied: "I wouldn't suggest taken claritin or nasonex due to the info you found."

Jamester replied: "I don't know about the Claritin, but look closer at Tylenol...if you're taking LARGE doses. As long as you don't exceed the 4 gm/day, you'll be fine. Just to be safe though, I only use Tylenol if I absolutely have to - I've only used it maybe twice during my pregnancy so far. If Tylenol was bad, then a LOT of babies would be born with abnormalities - most pregnant women take it at some point in their pregnancy. So try not to stress - the doc knows what he's talking about."

Tylenol and Claritin? Is it safe to take claritin and tylenol together? I have allergies/cold/back aches and I took both together. Just wondering!

charleyit replied: "I have taken them together and have had no ill effects, Read the small print on the lables carefully and it would not hurt to consult a physician."

cloeen replied: "I think so!"

bridgettemerson replied: "Yes, it is fine. My son just received his first Claritan and Tylenol combo for alleriges."

nadia replied: "I think you should go with either one. You wont know the effects until after a little while. be extra careful"

ME! Who'd ya think? replied: "For future reference here's a link that will tell you about drug interactions... "

kjamesPharmD replied: "no problems there!"

What will work better for sinuses. Tylenol Sinus and Cold or Claritin? Like my nose is just stuffed and my sinuses are like clogged. I don't really feel to bad like cold wise I just wanna be able to clear my sinuses so I can talk with out sounding like a retard and quit blowing my nose. What medication is better to take for this? or do you know of a better one or maybe not a medication but a remedy. Please help!!! lol

A_Mom replied: "Drinking black tea is wonderful for clearing out the sinuses."

baseball mom replied: "What helps me most is Advil Cold and Sinus."

kihteacher replied: "Get a Netti pot at the pharmacy and wash out your sinuses. It works great and can be reused whenever you get this issue again. BUT, of the two choices, I say Claritin."

Taking tylenol 9 hours after claritin? Earlier this morning i took some claritin-d allergy medicine. Its not working and i was wondering if i could take some tylenol nose congesting medicine 9 hours later. The claritin is supposed to last 24 hours

wingchild replied: "Depends what's in the Tylenol meds. Claritin-D contains Loratadine and Pseudoephedrine in a 24-hour sustained release tablet. Tylenol's products typically contain Acetominaphen (painkiller), Guafenesin (expectorant, helps break up mucous so you cough), and either Pseudoephedrine or Phenylephrine (both decongestants, which one you get depends on which product you buy). The biggest concern you'd have is that you would be doubling up on the decongestant meds. If one isn't working (like claritin) taking another (like tylenol) may help. You're probably safe taking normal doses of the tylenol med with the sustained release claritin operating in the background, but be sane about it. If you take a dose and feel worse, don't double up on the next one - see a doctor."

Is it Safe to Mix Claritin D and Tylenol Sinus? I took a Claritin D tablet (Loratadine 10 mg, Pseudoephedrine Sulfate 240 mg) this morning at 8 am because i thought i had an allegery and thats why i had Nascal congestion and pain... Turns out im sick so now its 9 pm im really suffering from the nasal pain and cant even consentrate. Would be able to take Tylenol Sinus (Acatamophen 325 mg per cap, Phenylephrine HCI 5 mg per cap....so x2, 650 and 10 mg) right now since Claritin is 24 hour pill? Please provide a chart or some concrete source, I wont believe or give credit to simple "yes and no" responses

Laura L replied: "I can only recommend this because it works for me and my family 100% of the time for 5 people for sinus infection. I use it to cure sinus infections. THere are many kinds of bacteria that live in the sinuses, and this gets rid of all the bad ones!.This is the only thing that really helped me --- my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria. you need distilled water sea salt liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store. in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature. add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix. using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down. Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy. or just use a neti pot, I like this better. The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don't get rid of them all. Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time. Then do it once a week for maintenance. There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me. I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore. best wishes"

Can you take Tylenol Cold and Sinus for allergies? I have allergies and in the past Claritin and Allegra have done nothing for me. Tylenol Cold and Sinus (the behind the pharmacy counter stuff) has done wonders for my cold and I'm wondering if anyone has tried it on allergies?

J D replied: "If it has worked well for you in the past it will probably help with your allergy symptoms (if they are cold like) as well. You may have better results with Tylenol Allergy tho."

bundygil replied: "Yeah, it'll work on allergies. Allergies give the same symptoms as a cold as the body reacts in the same way, thinking the allergy is an infection."

ARMY WIFE replied: "Yes, I have used it when I was suffering with a sinus infection."
