Who knows if Celexa with the generic name Citalopram is as good for depression as Effexor XR? I find medicine costs way to much and I am trying to help my insurance save money. It costs $ 195 for Effexor XR for a months supply for the generic verision. The brand name is $ 160. I know this is strange because usually the generic is cheaper. The generic used to cost $ 165 last month and went up $ 30 in one month. I had to pay cash and the insurance reimburses me 100%. The pharmacist told me that the Celexa costs $ 10. If anyone knows a medicine that works as well as Effexor XR in generic please let me know. I was told that Celexa don't work as good as Effexor XR by the nurse at my doctor's office. Please help I need an answer on this!!

Nellie replied: "This is a question you should talk to your doctor about. That or you could ask you pharmasit. But your doctor would or should know what would work best. Also drugs, percrition or over the counter, affect different people differently. So asking anyone which they like or works good for them may not do the same thing for you."

BrandieLace replied: "i don't think celexa works that well either. I took zoloft first and yeah it made me feel like a zombie but i liked it better. I switched to celexa for the same reasons- the cost of the fiurst medication. you should speak to your physician about it. Or if you're in counseling. I'm not sure what you're taking these for, so you may not be in counseling, but if you are, ask that person and/or your doctor. The pharmacist should be able to tell you also what might work the same as what you wrre taking."

d; replied: "I've taken celexa and it didn't help at all. You should see if you can get your medication thru the mail. That could save you some money. You have a doctor write you a pre ion for 90 days with refills and a pharmacy will send you 3 months worth of pills for a lesser cost than you would pay at a retail pharmacy."

creativemind replied: "Ive taken Apo Citalopram for a very long time to treat depression. it didnt work...So they upped me to Prozac. I heard that Effexor was one of the least effective drugs for depression....and that it wasnt as good...Celexa is safer....But its side affects effected me more than it helped me....depends ont he person"

Sonny replied: "zoloft did not work well for me, i went up to 150mg before tapering off and going onto effexor xr at 75mg. i wouldn't trade effexor for anything, it has brought me back out of a severe state of depression and now i am in total remission. as others have said, it really is different for each person."

Effexor XR vs. generic version? I've been taking 75 mg Effexor XR once daily. At the checkup he said he wanted to keep the dosage the same. I talked to him about the expense, and he switched me to the generic version which I'm supposed to take twice a day. The pre ion was only $5 cheaper, and the dosage of each pill is still 75 mg (same as the once daily dose of the namebrand Effexor XR). It seems to me that the dosage should be dropped to half of the original dosage since I'm taking the generic twice as often. I asked a nurse at his office who said that because the generic is not extended release that it's ok that I'm taking 150 mg a day rather than 75 mg daily of the name version, but it just doesn't convince me. Does anyone have any experience changing from once daily Effexor XR to the twice daily generic equivalent?

untreatableonline replied: "I use to go back and forth depending on the pharmacy's supply and never noticed any difference between the two. As for the differences in dosage I would call a pharmacist as they would have the best answer for you."
